Der lyrische Dichter und Kitharöde Mesomedes von Kreta wirkte in der ersten Hälfte des zweiten Jahrhunderts nach Christus und war ein Freigelassener und Günstling Kaiser Hadrians. Jedes Gedicht erhält eine inhaltliche Einleitung und einen Zeilenkommentar. Eine allgemeine Einleitung behandelt außerdem die kulturellen Umstände der Hadrianischen Zeit, die Praxis der antiken Musik und die literarischen Strömungen der Epoche. Die Arbeit ordnet das anspielungsreiche Werk des Mesomedes in den größeren Kontext der Zweiten Sophistik ein. In vielen der Gedichte findet die Autorin auch subtile Hinweise auf den Kaiser. Diese sind teils preisend, teils subversiv zu deuten. |
